DESCRIPTION:There are some unsurprising things that math explains very well. “If I throw a ball into the air\, how long until it hits the ground?” “If a population grows at a certain rate\, when does it reach a particular threshold?” “If train A leaves at a certain time\, and train B leave at a certain time\, when will they pass each other?” We will focus our attention on a particular mathematical result that IS surprising. If we travel around a closed region (imagine a race car going around one lap of a track)\, it is NOT surprising that we should know the distance traveled. That is after all what odometers measure. But what if instead\, as we traveled around a closed region\, a different gauge on our dashboard told us the AREA we just enclosed? This is the surprising and remarkable conclusion of Green’s Theorem. In this talk\, we will explore how this theorem (and a couple other interesting mathematical results) achieve their amazing conclusions! \n
